The UNICEF Representative in Macedonia, Benjamin Perks, after the meeting with the leaders of the University of Tetova, in front of professors, university students and pupils from “Fan Noli” Elementary School, in village Trebosh, held a lecture on “The Influence of Violence and Adverse Childhood Experiences on long-term Prosperity, Security and Development”. During this lecture he presented some statistics on violence against children in the Western Balkans. “With the invitation of the academic staff of the University of Tetova, I visited this University to hold the today’s lecture. First, I conducted a meeting with the Rector of the University of Tetova, Prof. Dr. Vullnet Ameti, and several deans of faculties and discussed on the situation and protection of children in your country. Then I held a lecture on violence. Regarding violence against children, we have conducted a research in the Western Balkans and the general statistics say that one out of three children is physically abused, but in your country, in the Republic of Macedonia, this percentage is higher. So it means that one out of two children is physically abused. If we make a comparison between countries in the Balkans, physical violence against children in Macedonia is higher than in Kosovo, but is smaller compared to Albania. While, as for the emotional disregard of children, it is concluded that one out of three children is neglected” – said Benjamin Perks.
The Dean of the Faculty of Pedagogy of the University of Tetova, Prof. Dr. Fadbi Osmani, said that the faculty he manages and some other faculties of the University of Tetova have the necessary human resources to collaborate with UNICEF and to join in their projects related to children’s rights and protection of them from physical violence. “Today we had a very important meeting with the UNICEF Representative in Macedonia and we informed him about the activities we undertake for protection and education of children, and in particular we were focused on the issue of education and preparation of children in pre-school education institutions and their preparation for elementary school. We assured the UNICEF Representative that we are ready to implement some major projects dealing with the protection of children from violence and their rights. These projects will be sponsored by UNICEF and will be implemented by several faculties of our University, respectively Faculty of Pedagogy, Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Law. Our faculties have the potential to deal with these projects that have to do with children’s rights, including the disabled children, because the Faculty of Pedagogy now has a special study program dedicated to children with special needs and trains cadres for the education of these children” – said Prof. Dr. Fadbi Osmani.
In a sign of gratitude for his visit to the University of Tetova, our Rector, Prof. Dr. Vullnet Ameti, to the UNICEF Representative in Macedonia, Benjamin Perks, bestowed the portrait of our national hero George Castriot Skanderbeg.
