Students and a part of the academic staff from the Department of History at the University of Tetova, from April 24–26, 2026, carried out a study visit with a research-oriented focus in several of the most representative centers of cultural and historical heritage in Southern Albania.

This journey began in Tepelenë, the birthplace of Ali Pasha of Tepelenë, where the students had the opportunity to visit the city’s castle and learn about the historical role of this figure in the political developments of the region. The itinerary then continued to Gjirokastër, the museum city known as the “Stone City”, distinguished for its unique architecture. There, they visited the monumental castle and the house of the great writer Ismail Kadare, offering a special blend of history and literature.

Afterward, the visit focused on Sarandë, where the participants visited Lëkurësi Castle and then the archaeological park of Butrint, one of the most valuable treasures of Albanian cultural heritage protected by UNESCO.

In this unique setting, the students closely explored monuments from different historical periods, such as the ancient theater, early Christian basilicas, temples, and surrounding walls, gaining a deeper understanding of the layering of civilizations in this area.

The journey continued toward Vlorë, a city of special importance in national history. The visit to the Independence Museum became a moment of reflection for the students, who had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with documents and artifacts related to the act of declaring independence. The program also included stops at Flag Square and at the grave of Ismail Qemali, concluding the visit at Kaninë Castle, a living testimony to early and medieval history.

Through this experience, our students and professors deepened their scientific knowledge and also strengthened their appreciation for Albanian cultural and historical heritage.
